How did you get into the mess you’re in now? How did your finances get so bad? How come your relationships are failing? What about your health? You’ve jumped several waste sizes, and you can’t figure when it all happened. Is this just the way life is? Things get worse over time?
I was thinking about this very thing this morning, and I was reminded of a small piece of wisdom that one of my old mentors used to share with me. He said:
“The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine.”
I know that doesn’t sound too profound, but if you take a few moments to meditate on it, you’ll realize that this is true for both positive and negative reasons and here’s why.
When someone is unhappy with where they are in life, they don’t usually blame themselves for it. They’ll blame life, fate, god, the universe, other people, or whomever. Sure, they acknowledge that they had a part to play in their results, but they tend to minimize their role. Why? It’s because they feel they didn’t make any BIG mistakes.
How “Little Things” Create Big Messes
This is also why they complain. They can’t figure out “what went wrong” in their past. What did they do that was so bad? How did this all happen? They feel like they really tried to make things work, but life just screwed them anyway!
What they’re missing is what was happening in their daily routine. It was the “little things” they weren’t paying attention to that added up over time to become “big things.” For example:
- It’s the little neglects and harsh words over years that end most marriages.
- It’s the little wasteful spending over the years that bankrupt most people.
- It’s the little snacks over the years that add fat to your body.
Whether financially, relationally, physically, psychologically, emotionally, or vocationally, it’s what we allowed, neglected, or did in our daily routine that created the mess(es) we’re in.
Ask Yourself Tough Questions
When was the last time you did a thorough examination of your life, habits, and relationships? Ask yourself some tough questions. Ask those around you what they think. You may find you’re handling your loved ones to harshly; wasting too much time on television; spending too much money on things you don’t need; eating too much crap; neglecting your family, etc.
These are the little things that eventually become big things, and you and I can put a stop to those things now if we can put aside our pride and admit the role we’re playing in creating the life we don’t want.
The good news is that the same is true if you’re daily making “little improvements” to your life. Little changes to your health, relationships, finances, career, etc. will create bigger changes over time as you remain consistent. Again, the secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine, which makes “today” one of the most important days of your life!
